Summary
Periodic vaginal bleeding occurs in humans (who are henceforth called “women,” a word describing culture as well as biology), old-world apes, and few other mammals. By current concepts, women’s menstrual cycles provide estrogen for thirty to fifty years; following one year of no flow they become menopausal and “estrogen deficient.” By contrast we now know that the purpose of menstrual cycles is to supply all cells and tissues with the balanced essential actions of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) produced in feedback-controlled patterns to facilitate fecundability and preserve younger women’s well-being. We also now know that menopausal women’s health is negatively affected (by increased osteoporosis, heart disease, breast and endometrial cancers) if those past menstrual cycles produced inadequate net P4 to counterbalance and complement E2’s actions. Menstrual periodicity, flow, and ovulatory characteristics in women reflect the integrated actions/interactions of the central nervous system through the hypothalamus and pituitary, ideally leading to each cycle’s stimulation of a dominant egg-containing follicle. That follicle, by central complex feedback loops, produces the cyclic, graded amounts of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) for that three- to five-week period and releases a viable egg. Central reproductive connections allow adult premenopausal women’s menstrual cycle periodicity, ovulation or not, and luteal phase lengths, that can be adapted to the challenges and demands of each woman’s current physiological and sociocultural/emotional environments. These new ideas are based on the differing and complementary cellular and tissue actions of E2 and P4. E2 is essential for cell growth and stimulates cell proliferation. P4 uniquely counterbalances and controls proliferation while stimulating cell differentiation and tissue maturation. Thus, E2–P4 actual and relative productions integrate cycles within each woman’s reproductive lifecycle (adolescent, premenopausal, perimenopausal), and are related to her nutrition, illness, energy expenditure, and social/emotional/spiritual environments. The subtlest indication of a stressed reproductive system is truncated P4 production in the short luteal phase within a normal-length, ovulatory menstrual cycle. This adaptation protects a woman from pregnancy when she has inadequate net energy balance or is under emotional/social/spiritual or physical duress. Thus, a normal luteal phase length within a three- to five-week regular menstrual cycle is a bellwether of women’s well-being. By contrast, regular cycles with ovulatory disturbances (anovulation or short luteal phases; E2>P4) predict current decreased well-being and poor later life health. The purpose of this review is to provide a practical approach to understanding this new women’s menstrual cycle balanced E2–P4 paradigm applied to common clinical situations including subfertility with regular cycles, premenstrual symptoms, and heavy menstrual flow.

The Kirchhoff approximation is widely used to describe the scatter of elastodynamic waves. It simulates the scattered field as the convolution of the free-space Green’s tensor with the geometrical elastodynamics approximation to the total field on the scatterer surface and, therefore, cannot be used to describe nongeometrical phenomena, such as head waves. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that an alternative approximation, the convolution of the far-field asymptotics of the Lamb’s Green’s tensor with incident surface tractions, has no such limitation. This is done by simulating the scatter of a critical Gaussian beam of transverse motions from an infinite plane. The results are of interest in ultrasonic nondestructive testing.
Body image disorders associated with lifestyle and body composition of female adolescents

Objective:
To investigate the association between body image disorders and the lifestyle and body composition of female adolescents.
Design:Cross-sectional study.
Setting:The Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) and Silhouette Scale and Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-3 were used to evaluate the participants’ body image. Body composition was evaluated by a Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry equipment, and lifestyles were identified by latent class analysis (LCA) using the poLCA package for R.
Participants:Female adolescents aged 14–19 years old, in the city of Viçosa-MG, Brazil.
Results:In total, 405 girls participated in the study. Almost half of the participants were dissatisfied with their current physical appearance (51·4 %), presented body perception distortions (52·9 %). 47·3 % of the adolescents were dissatisfied with their body according to the BSQ, and another 8 % severely so. Subjects with an ‘Inactive and Sedentary’ latent lifestyle were 1·71 times as likely to feel dissatisfied as those with active and sedentary or inactive and non-sedentary lifestyles (95 % CI 1·08, 2·90, P = 0·047). Body image disorders showed an association with decreased amounts of moderate and vigorous physical activity, high screen time, increased alcohol consumption and excess body fat.
Conclusions:Particular patterns of lifestyle and body composition seem to be associated in female adolescents with dissatisfaction with, distortion of and excessive concern about appearance. Specifically, physical inactivity, sedentary behaviour, alcohol consumption and high body fat percentage may be strongly linked to body image disorders.

In this report, we explore a case of symptoms consistent with menstrual psychosis. In order to do this, a review of the literature relating to this topic was conducted and a report was written. This is a case of a previously well adolescent female who experienced psychotic symptoms in the pre-menstrual phase of her cycle and became well soon after her menstrual period began. These episodes were prevented by aripiprazole, but recurred once medication was withdrawn. We conclude that psychosis in some women may have a relationship with the menstrual cycle. In women presenting with psychosis, it may be appropriate to note menstrual variation in symptoms. This could have a potential role in individualisation of treatment for women with psychotic disorders.

Magnetic helicity flux gives information about the topology of a magnetic field passing through a boundary. In solar physics applications, this boundary is the photosphere and magnetic helicity flux has become an important quantity in analysing magnetic fields emerging into the solar atmosphere. In this work we investigate the evolution of magnetic helicity flux in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of solar flux emergence. We consider emerging magnetic fields with different topologies and investigate how the magnetic helicity flux patterns correspond to the dynamics of emergence. To investigate how the helicity input is connected to the emergence process, we consider two forms of the helicity flux. The first is the standard form giving topological information weighted by magnetic flux. The second form represents the net winding and can be interpreted as the standard helicity flux less the magnetic flux. Both quantities provide important and distinct information about the structure of the emerging field and these quantities differ significantly for mixed sign helicity fields. A novel aspect of this study is that we account for the varying morphology of the photosphere due to the motion of the dense plasma lifted into the chromosphere. Our results will prove useful for the interpretation of magnetic helicity flux maps in solar observations.
Slip systems and critical resolved shear stress in pyrite: an electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) investigation

A suite of experimentally deformed single-crystal pyrite samples has been investigated using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Single crystals were loaded parallel to <100> or <110> and deformed at a strain rate of 10-5 s-1, confining pressure of 300 MPa and temperatures of 600°C and 700°C. Although geometrically (Schmid factor) the {001}<100> slip system should not be activated in <100> loaded samples, lattice rotation and boundary trace analyses of the distorted crystals indicate this slip system is easier to justify. Determination of 75 MPa as the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) for {001}<100> activation, in the <110> loaded crystals, suggests a crystal misalignment of ~5—15° in the <100> loaded crystals would be sufficient to activate the {001}<100> slip system. Therefore, {001}<100> is considered the dominant slip system in all of the single-crystal pyrite samples studied. Slip-system analysis of the experimentally deformed polycrystalline pyrite aggregates is consistent with the single-crystal findings, with the exception that {001}<11̄> also appears to be important, although less common than the {001}<100> slip system. The lack of crystal preferred orientation (CPO) development in the polycrystalline pyrite aggregates can be accounted for by the presence of two independent symmetrically equivalent slip systems more than satisfying the von Mises criterion.

Background:
Excessive body fat, mainly abdominal fat, is associated with higher cardiovascular risk. However, a fat localisation measurement that would be more indicative of risk in adolescents has not yet been established.
Objective:This study was conducted in order to evaluate the correlation between body fat location measurements and cardiovascular disease risk factors in female adolescents.
Materials and methods:A total of 113 girls – 38 eutrophic according to their body mass index but with a high percentage of body fat, 40 eutrophic with adequate body fat, and 35 with excessive weight – were evaluated using 15 anthropometrical measurements and 10 cardiovascular risk factors.
Results:The central skinfold was the best measurement for predicting variables such as glycaemia and high-density lipoprotein; waist circumference for insulin and homeostasis model assessment; coronal diameter for total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein; sagittal abdominal diameter for triglycerides and leptin; hip circumference for blood pressure; and the central/peripheral skinfold ratio for homocysteine. The correlation between the measurements and the number of risk factors showed that waist circumference and the waist/stature ratio produced the best results.
Conclusions:The results suggest that the body fat distribution in adolescents is relevant in the development of cardiovascular risk factors. Simple measurements such as waist circumference and the waist/stature ratio were the best predictors of a risk of disease and they should therefore be associated with the body mass index in clinical practice in order to identify those adolescents at higher risk.

Relatively little is known about the factors in Canada which lead to osteoporosis and its concomitant fractures. The Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study (CaMos) is a prospective cohort study which will estimate the incidence and prevalence of declining bone mass and fractures. The impact of osteoporosis in Canada will be assessed, including regional variation and the effect of various risk factors. The study will provide information for developing prevention programs. The cohort has been drawn from a random population-based sample of non-institutionalized men and women 25 years old or more and living within 50 km. of nine cities in Canada. Through telephone interviews 9,423 participants have been recruited. All answered an extensive questionnaire, and had physical measurements related to bone quality taken. This paper details the CaMos baseline and five-year follow-up protocol.

Over a four-year period 878 samples of faeces were collected from five species of small wild rodents and two species of shrews at sites in England, Scotland and Wales. A search was made for Salmonella in these samples but no isolations of this genus were made. Several other genera of Enterobacteriaceae were identified.

Four populations of small wild British rodents were studied by capture-re-capture methods over a period of three years. Samples of blood were taken from these animals and tested for antibodies to nine viruses. Animals were removed from another 11 sites around the UK, and immunosuppressed. Samples of tissue from these animals were tested for the presence of viruses by passage in laboratory mice and serum samples from some of them were tested for antibody to the nine viruses. Indications were found of the possible influence of epizootic outbreaks of certain diseases on animal populations.

Using Persian Blackhead ewes, milk composition and the effect of diet on content of milk fat and milk yield were investigated. Analysis of the milk of nine ewes for fat, protein, ash and lactose (by difference) throughout a twelve-week lactation gave results which were compared with those in the literature. Average values were 5·9, 5·6, 1·0 and 4·8 % respectively. The milk of nine ewes fed on a high plane of nutrition contained significantly more fat than that of ewes fed on a low plane of nutrition; values were 8·8 and 8·3 % respectively. High plane ewes gave significantly more milk than low plane ewes. Ewes suckling twins gave significantly more milk than those suckling singles. Lambs suckling high plane ewes gained significantly more weight than those suckling low plane ewes both from birth to 3 weeks as well as from birth to 12 weeks. Male lambs gained significantly more weight than females.
Highly significant correlation coefficients were obtained between milk consumed by the lamb and its gain in weight. Conversion efficiencies of milk to gain in weight were calculated and compared with literature values.

The Macarthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (CDI) have been used widely to document early communicative development. The paper reports on a large community sample of 1,447 children recruited from low, middle and high socioeconomic (SES) areas across metropolitan Melbourne, Australia. Regression analyses were conducted to determine the extent to which communicative behaviours reported at 0 ; 8 and 1 ; 0 predicted vocabulary development at 1 ; 0 and 2 ; 0. In support of previous findings with smaller, often less representative samples, gesture and object use at 1 ; 0 were better predictors of 2 ; 0 vocabulary than were gesture and object use at 0 ; 8. At 1 ; 0, children from the lower SES groups were reported to understand more words than children from the higher SES groups, but there were no SES differences for words produced at 1 ; 0 or 2 ; 0. The findings add to our understanding of the variability in the development of early communicative behaviours.

We are developing practical methodologies to characterize pool sizes and residence times for fractions of soil organic matter (SOM) using radiocarbon, with a particular focus on SOM in New Zealand pasture soils that responds to global change on decadal timescales. As single mean residence times for the entire SOM pool can be misleading or uninterpretable, we focus on the use of samples collected about 7 and 40 yr after the bomb14C spike to separate SOM into at least 2 pools. These results from a box model methodology yield sensible estimates of the proportion of “passive” SOM, and the residence time of the dominant pool with approximately decadal residence times. These results are supported by chemical analysis. Approximately 45-yr residence times of light-fraction SOM in a relatively infertile soil contrast with ∼16-yr residence times in a more fertile soil, and correspond to large differences in the proportion of lignin- and polysaccharide-derived SOM in these soils measured using pyrolysis-GC/MS. To achieve greater detail and assess the degree to which “active” SOM with annual turnover rates may bias results from the simple model, we use density as a means of isolating SOM with different degrees of mineral association. Initial results from grazed pasture soils sampled in 2003–4 emphasize that isolating non-mineral-associated light fractions can improve understanding, but may be less important than identifying fractions associated with unique mineralogy. In this soil, a fraction with density ≥2.55 g/mL shows much larger proportions of passive SOM than other fractions.

A novel, low-cost, phased-array antenna that uniquely incorporates bulk phase shifting using voltage-tunable dielectric (VTD) material is presented. The array does not contain an individual phase shifter at each radiating element. This paper presents the antenna concept and describes how it can be used as a low-cost phased array. The VTDs that are used in this antenna are described. The measured antenna patterns of a prototype phased array demonstrating electronic beam scanning at 10 GHz are also presented.

Large-scale applications of non-persistent but broad-spectrum chemical insecticides in Africa during the 1980s for control of acridoid pests, particularly the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria Forskål) and Sahelian pest grasshoppers, raised concern about environmental damage and human safety. Similar concerns have been expressed in Australia, the United States, and Canada and have led to a search for alternative strategies. To lessen dependence on chemicals, an integrated pest management (IPM) approach for grasshopper control has been encouraged in the United States with emphasis on biological control as an important component and this is also desirable elsewhere, but additional biocontrol components are needed. Current strategies for most pest acridoids rely on short-term destruction of outbreak populations. Nymphs are the preferred target wherever possible and inundative augmentation of entomopathogenic deuteromycete fungi formulated as biopesticides could replace chemical spraying in some cases, especially where the major threat is to crops remote from the pest breeding areas. Entomopathogens are slower acting than chemicals and thus best suited for use where the pest is not immediately threatening to crops. Schistocerca gregaria and Oedaleus senegalensis Krauss pose particularly difficult problems because of the very large area and inaccessibility of their potential breeding grounds, their very sudden upsurges, and their great mobility as adult swarms. Fast-acting chemicals are likely to be needed when rapid intervention is required to control these pests, but an IPM strategy could incorporate biopesticide application in the early stages of upsurges and also be used for swarm control in some cases. However, improved prediction and monitoring are needed to facilitate the use of biopesticides and other IPM techniques against these pests.
